In September of 2019, the option to pay using Bitcoin suddenly appeared on Germany's Burger King website and mobile applications. Some believe that the German branch made this move to try and increase demand and open their service up to new customers. However, users could only buy their food with Bitcoin through the online food delivery site 'Lieferservice Delivery Service' and were redirected to BitPay.

In January 2020, the famous fast-food chain Burger King announced that it would start accepting cryptocurrency payments in select restaurants in Venezuela. The move was seen as a way to help the Venezuelan people who are struggling with hyperinflation. According to reports, the Venezuelan bolivar has lost 99% of its value since 2013 and is currently the world's worst-performing currency. Burger King's capacity to accept crypto was through its partnership with Cryptobuyer, which is a cryptocurrency payment processor. Under the partnership, Burger King in Venezuela would start accepting Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, Dash and Tether.

According to local news, Russian branches of Burger King started accepting Bitcoin payments back in 2017, starting with one Moscow branch to a confirmed nationwide rollout. As reported by news outlet Uznay Vse, the first Burger King Bitcoin transaction went through in June of 2017, representing 'the first official reports of Bitcoin payments for goods and services in Russia." Continuing, Uznay Vse claimed that Burger King were working on implementing the appropriate technology so that people could pay in Bitcoin through their iOS and Android apps.

Being the home of Bitcoinstad, the outcome of three enthusiasts meeting and promoting Bitcoin to their local town, it seemed like the obvious choice when Burger King started accepting Bitcoin payments in 2016. On the 18th of February, Bitcoinstad announced that 'The Burger King in the city center is the latest to join the project. For Bitcoin enthusiasts Arnhem is like heaven as you can practically pay everything with bitcoins."
